並非只有以連接詞起始的句子才可用逗號, 舉凡獨立片語、分詞構句、副詞片語等, 都可使用逗號與主要子句隔開.
With three people away ill, we'll have to close the shop.
"With three people away ill"就是副詞片語(介系詞片與當副詞功能用). 類似例子有很多:
- Under the circumstances, S + V...
- With regard to xxx, S + V...
- In order to V..., S + V...
- In consideration of..., S + V...
都用了逗號.
Whatever problems you have, you can always come to me for help.
= No matter what problems you have, you can always come to me for help.
這樣看就比較清楚了, No matter這個片語當連接詞用, 用逗號沒問題.
Whatever在此句雖是形容詞, 但它隱含著關係形容詞what, 而整個"Whatever problems you have"是當副詞功能用, 所以用逗號.
