"there is" or "there are" ??

Hello there,
I have a question :

There is a bed, a desk, a TV and two chairs in my bedroom.

or

There are a bed, a desk, a TV and two chairs in my bedroom.

因為 我曾經在教科書中看到
"There is a pencil and a ruler on my desk."
所以
覺得很困惑.....

不知能否有人可以解答? Thanks a lot.
