Indeed it is French. It is also Finnish and Portuguese with different definitions attached to it.
However, the definition of "POIS" in English is this:
Hawaiian fermented paste made from the pounding of tuber (塊莖) and taro (芋頭).
I will revise if that word is not acceptable.
