Fall flat

If a remark, plan, or joke falls flat, people do not react to it and so it fails.


Carefully prepared jokes often fall flat, but there is nothing wrong with spontaneous humour in the classroom.

The proposal to bottle and sell water and the city's reservoir fell flat, and now officials can't even give it away.
