After some "research", I noticed “去学校” or "上学” seem to be interchangeable, so you're right to point that out.
However, "上学” has more meaning when used in different scenarios.

Let's catch the bus! - 让我们赶上公车把

Let's catch the bus to (the) school! - 让我们赶上公车去学校把

Or how would you say this in everyday life?

YQ: Your translation is not wrong, but any word for word translation would sound unnatural. I think a closer example could be "快上公车吧!"

For my case, I would simply say "公车来了!"

Is it correct to say 上学坐的公车 for "the bus that I use for going to school"?

YQ: Should be correct. If it's a school bus, we simply call it 校车。
