音節(syllable)?

請問一下為什麼字典裏面每個單字都有點點隔開?
For example:
civilization-->civ.i.li.za.tion
Color-->col.or
depict-->de.pict
dependent-->de.pen.dent
Ps:中文一字一音節(請問這是什麼意思?)
Ps:Color 唸的時候是co.lor,為什麼標成 col.or?
