釋迦這種水果的英文叫做 sweetsop。但如果去查英漢辭典，你會發現它的中文是番荔枝。番荔枝是釋迦的學名。在台灣以外的大多數華人還是稱呼它為番荔枝。釋迦的英文學名是(Annona squamosa)。 Annona 是它的屬名，指的是ㄧ個島的名稱; squamosa 則是 squamous （鱗狀的）的拉丁文形容詞。採用此形容詞的原因是由於釋迦的外觀使然。釋迦的英文俗名有 sugar apple、 custard apple 和 anon。

另外，有一種水果長得也很像釋迦。名稱為 cherimoya (Annona cherimola)。Cherimoya 比釋迦大多了。

還有一種由釋迦和 cherimoya 雜交出來的混種叫做 atemoya，此一水果在台灣則叫做"鳳梨釋迦"。
