How about "beat one's brains out"?
(Also, rack one's brain; rack one's wit; cudgel one's brains.)

Derived from Yahoo Dictionary:
It's so knotty.
It's so troublesome.
It's very bothersome.
It's nerve-racking.
It's quite vexing.
It scratches my head.

Thank you futari and uncle glot.

beat one's brains out 絞盡腦汁
例:He beat his brains out but still didn't know where she went.(他絞盡腦汁也想不出她人會到哪裡去。)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
那麼,to beat one's brains out是不是要把某人的腦子打出來呢? To beat one's brains out實際上和打人毫無關係。作為一個習慣用語,to beat one's brains out就是絞盡腦汁的意思。

1: Please, could you give me a little help on these algebra problems? I've been beating my brains out all weekend trying to figure them out, but I'm still not sure I understand them.

2: This VCR is too complicated for me! Okay, you've tried to teach me twice how to run it, but I beat my brains out again yesterday trying to tape a show and I still couldn't make it work.

例句-3: Kids all over America watch cartoons on TV every Saturday morning. Almost every day I hear parents complain that the commercials they see over and over again brainwash the kids into buying stuff they don't really need.

例句-4: Several of her friends brainwashed my sister Mary into believing that her best friend Carol was saying nasty things about her behind her back. Mary was as sorry as she could be when she found out it wasn't true.

1) The engineer racked her brain to find the bug.

2) The listed company spared no effort in upgrading its R&D center.

3) The busboy was canned for his halfhearted attitude.

(1) The detective beat his brains out to unlock the mystery(那個探員絞盡腦汁,要破解這個秘密)。(2) "If you don't pay up by the end of this week," snarled the loan shark, "we'll beat your brains out."(那個放高利貸的人大聲咆哮:「你這個星期之內不清還貸款,我們會把你揍扁。」)帶恐嚇意味的beat one's brains out,不應輕易出口;凱文所說的beat my brains out,則當然是指苦思。
說「苦思」,英文還有兩個類似的成語:to rack one's brains和to cudgel one's brains。 兩字作動詞,一指「施用拉扯四肢酷刑」,一指「用粗棍打」,可見to rack/cudgel one's brains和to beat one's brains out都有「苦了腦袋」的意思,例如:I racked/cudgeled my brains trying to remember where I had seen him before(我一直在想我以前在哪裡見過他)。
