Present tense or Past Tense?

Eh...just curious, should we tell our stories in present tense or past tense? When I was learning English (and I still am :D), I was taught that whenever you are describing something, it's better to do it in present tense unless time is important in the story you are telling. Could any expert comment on this? Thanks!
