This idiom refers to ideas or aims that two or more people or groups share, that help them to work together easily.
The decision nearly split the Presbyrerian church apart, but we've tried very hard to find as much common ground as we can in order to prevent that.
Leaders of the three warring groups claim that there's no common ground for any possible basis for negotiation betwen them.
