Yes, it was a good time in Budapest for me.
But I have to disappoint you ... I got the translation from a guy called Michael Beevor. But who knows, maybe a Chinese with an English artist name ... Look here ... http://www.mathstat.dal.ca/~lukacs/ja/poems2/jozsef-eng.htm ... and I am sorry, but ... a second disappointment. The two existing German translations seem to be even worse ... http://www.perlentaucher.de/buch/attila-jozsef/ein-wilder-apfelbaum-will-ich-werden-szeretnem-ha-vadalmafa-lennek.html Maybe we should cooperate and translate some of his really great poems ... Btw, you are right ... life is really sometimes a mystery. I studied a travel-guide about pubs and coffeehouses in Budapest ... and a guy wrote there ... at this place, I liked to sit and read poems of Attila József. I never went to this pub ... but I liked to read some of Atillas poems ... Now one small request from me ... could you help me to find an Hungarian internet page, where I can see the original text of this poem by myself? Would be great!!! ( ... I know about his problems with trains ... especially at the end of his life ... ) But I love traveling by train ... and I liked the end of that poem. Already when I was small, it was always something special for me to watch the passing trains, ... and their lights in the night. Quote:

That's great, Dagege! So you were not tricked by "luring girls" in the 5th district (the innermost part of Pest) - newspapaers are full of these cases nowadays.
When I was at the army (as it was an obligation) I learnt most of his greatest poems by heart standing guard. You picked the right site, there you can find all of his poems. http://www.mek.oszk.hu/00700/00708/html/ versek időrendben - poems in chronological order versek betűrendben - poems in alphabetical order One of my personal favourites is "A Dunánál". The second verse (numbered as '2') is quite mystical... --- I don't know if you've seen his statue - it is made for this poem: https://www.google.hu/search?q=j%C3%B3zsef+attila+szobra+a+dun%C3%A1n%C3%A1l&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=YSoeU4-RGumr4ATf94DYAg&ved=0CGEQsAQ&biw=1366&bih=665 Maybe I am wrong... Not easy to translate poems, I guess. I simply don't feel in the Englsh version what I see in the original... Interesting, for a long-long time I have not read his poems... All of a sudden it touched me... Quote:

Standing guard by the army must be a special cultural event ... one of my friends read the most strange things during his time by the German army ... even some old texts from J. Stalin ... I think ... (I hope ) ... just for provocation ~~~

It's a little bit confusing for me ...
Where I could find his statue? When I look at the photos of your link - ... the location seems to change from time to time ... If it is by the Danube now, then it should be in front of the parliament building ... That's why I didn't see it ... construction work is on there ... Quote:

Yes, Dagege, you'd make a great private eye too!
Till some years ago it was beside the Parliament, now it is in the tram stop beside/under the Parliament -some 20 meters away. That's a better place. - I myself did know it's become relocated. Quote:

Funny, I was at this tram stop of line 2 near the Parliament ... to look at the "shoe-exhibition" ... (look to the uploaded photo in the Photo Gallery)
I liked to drive around with the trams in Budapest ... because I could see a lot in this way ...
