It's the same grammar category as "If I were you" - it is only formally (形式上的) past tense, in fact it is "present conditional" (條件式)(而且條件是不真實的).

So you're ahead of me! (Anyway, tenses are really tough for Chinese natives... At least we have 3 tenses here and real conditional...)(I mean the conditional in Chinese is not a "real conditional", it has no special form.)
But... who is Ed?...   Thank you DaShushu, I have forgotten my grammar liao but I know what I am writing and where to put tenses and "ed" in the sentence :P
