Between the two sentences:
(1)We are given just the much food that will keep us alive.
(2)We are given just the amount of food that will keep us alive.

Indeed, sentence (1) is not quite idiomatic, and people tend to say sentence (2) instead.

By the way, the following usage is also common:
(3)We are given just the little food that will keep us alive.
