原稱鹽埕埔,因「鹽埕」而得名,康熙末年,漳州府南靖縣人趙元、蔡瑪為、黃孔等二十餘人應清吏招徠抵此,經營鹽務,名為打狗鹽埕,乾隆二十五年,鹽民已成小村莊,光緒三十四年,分期築港成功,以港底的泥沙填平低窪的鹽田,形成市街。
