Could you tell me what is the difference between hear and listen?

Hi Kathy,

One basic difference is that "hear" is a transitive verb and "listen" is not.

You can easily consult any dictionary for their difference in meanings and usages.

Hear or Listen (to)

1. Hey John! Can you (hear or listen) that sound?

2. (hear or listen) I'd like to have a word with you.

3. Do you like to (hear or listen) Rock music?

4. The pupils (hear or listen) the teacher carefully.

5. Sorry, I wasn't really (hear or listen).

6. Can you speak a little louder? I can't (hear or listen) you.

7. Have you (hear or listen) of the accident in Elm Road?

8. That's good to (hear or listen).

Please tell me which is correct answer? Why?

Please recheck your answers to questions 3. and 4.

You can hear Rock music,
and you can listen to Rock music,
but you cannot listen Rock music.

Likewise:
The pupils can hear the teacher carefully;
The pupils can listen to the teacher carefully;
but the pupils cannot listen the teacher carefully.

The simple reason is that "listen" is an intransitive verb.

Glot..I know the differences but I didnt bother to rephrase the sentence structure.
