A word used as the name of a game is acceptable, but if the word's definition in that game is a simple s-added plural, I doubt if it's a legal entry here. I'm sending this query about 'bugs'. Please comment.

Cheers!

Like "snaps", "sevens", "hearts", "nines", "spoons", "craits", and "pits", "bugs" is just one of those casual names for one of those fun games.

Hope this could serve as an answer to your question, Glotynn.

Hi Futari,

Such game names as snaps, sevens, hearts, nines, spoons, craits, and pits would aso be deemed unsuitable to fit the rules of this game because these words mean nothing other than the simple plurals.

How many bugs are in the jar? ← Obviously 'bugs' is a plural.

Hi Glotynn, I agree that the word "bugs" is plural in number, but when we say "Let's play (the game of) bugs!", we are referring to the party game called "bugs"; it's the NAME OF THE GAME, though no real bugs, perhaps, are involved in the course of playing.

==> "Bugs" (or "How Many Bugs?") is a party game about observation where players try to guess how the game actually works. If done well this simple and fast game can keep its participants guessing for quite some time.

==========================================================
==> "Snaps" is a trick game, often played at parties. It requires two people who understand the game rules and a number of others, namely, those who are to be tricked. The object of the game is for those who do not understand the rules to work out how the game is played.
==========================================================
==> "Hearts" (also Black Lady, Chase the Lady and Black Maria [1]) is a trick-taking card game for three or more players; the version for four is perhaps the best known, since the game is often included with Microsoft Windows.
==========================================================
==> "Nines" is a trick-taking game played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards. Nines is played by three people, and the object is to lower your score from 9 to zero.

Hi Futari,

I fully understand what you mean, but I believe there must be a restriction rule with respect to what type of the names of the games can be admitted to our game. If the name of a game 'bugs' is acceptable, why can't we allow such words as "cats", "dogs", "pigs", "pens", "toys",...etc. as they may all be the titles of books or articles. When I say "Let's have a look at Cats", I mean to read the book "Cats", and not to inspect a group of living cats. In fact, we know very well by our rules that these words are not legal for making entries to our game. This is the essential restriction, otherwise the rule of s-added plurals will run of no bindings.

For example, Geo's entries hugs (Haskell User's Gofer System, a bytecode interpreter) and pugs (a compiler and interpreter) are not the plurals of hug and pug, so the entries are ok. On the other hand, "bugs", "hearts", etc. carry no other meaning than the simple plurals in the relative games, so they ought to be restricted.

It's in fact no important who the winner may be, but we should try to make the game to look as reasonable as it can be.

Let's hear what other participants may say.

Sorry, folks, I still hold on to the fact that "bugs", as a name to a party game, is acceptable here in our word game. But, in order to avoid further controversy and have our game being held at a standstill for too long, I'm changing my entry of "bugs" to "tugs". So, next please.

701. glotynn - haka, woke, bion, fuze
702. futari - hasa, wove, cion, fuzz
703. geoette - hala, wive, chon, futz
704. glotynn - hola, dive, cuon, fitz
705. geoette - hora, hive, cyon, fizz
706. menquart - hara, rive, dyon, dizz
707. geoette - hapa, rife, lyon, zizz
708. futari - napa, life, byon, hizz
709. geoette - napu, fife, byou, jizz
710. futari - kapu, five, byor, jazz
711. geoette - kupu, cive, byer, razz
712. glotynn - pupu, cuve, bier, tazz
713. geoette - zupu, cute, boer, tuzz
714. futari - zulu, lute, bour, buzz
715. geoette - bulu, lote, tour, huzz
716. glotynn - budu, loth, cour, hugz
717. geoette - buru, loti, dour, hugs
718. futari - kuru, roti, doer, "tugs" ==> revised
719. geoette - kuzu, roty, does, pugs

By the way, should "Hugs" be considered as an "acronym" then? And "Hugz", a proper noun?

==> HUGS ('H'askell 'U'ser's 'G'ofer 'S'ystem) (also Hugs 98) is a bytecode interpreter for the functional programming language Haskell.

==> Made in the USA, "Hugz" launched with an initial line of 18 every occasion cards which are sold throughout the United States and as far and wide as Australia and the Middle East.

Hi Lady

The following link says that the word 'hugs' is used as a generic name.

http://cvs.haskell.org/Hugs/pages/users_guide/faq.html

QUOTE

8.1. What is the correct name for Hugs?

We use "Hugs" as a generic name for the interpreters we build.

UNQUOTE

If it is not an acceptable word, I am happy to withdraw my entry.

Cheers!

Geoette, my question is for reflection use only and does not require an answer to it since what's past is past. Do continue with the game. Perhaps reflections on the question might help us in the future when designing new word games. Regards.
