Rachel,
Honestly, I haven't found out any mistake in my previous post so far. The following examples are from the dictionary titled “A Dictionary of Answers to Common Questions in English (英語常見問題大辭典).” A. 當since 表示從過去的一個時間點延續至說話的現在時,通常要求主要子句使用動詞的現在完成式,而要求 since 從屬子句使用一般過去式: 1. We’ve been friends ever since we left school. 我們畢業以來一直是朋友。 2. Since I was a child I have lived in England. 我從童年時起就一直住在英國。 B. 當 since 子句所指的是一直持續到現在的一段時間時,從屬子句通常使用現在完成式: 1. I haven’t seen you since I have been back. 我回來以後一直沒有見到你。 2. Since they have lived in London, they have been increasingly happy. 自從他們住到倫敦以來,他們越來越高興。(他們現在仍在倫敦。) 3. He has never been to see me since I have been ill. 自從我有病以來他一次也沒來看我。(我現在仍在病中。) I think the sentence “There have been more than forty presidents of the United States since it has become a country.” fits definition B, for the States is still a country currently. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.

Nice job,Elinor....ummmm...grammar is a big headache for me too,but my teacher once told me grammar doesnt really matter that much in daily conversations as long as we can be understood....no idea about that....

Hi Elinor,
Sorry for the wrong information! I double-checked the grammar books that all I have mention "since" is usually used with present tense. But.....Tim told me both "has become" and "became" are acceptable. So......you are right! And Tim said he'll prepare a nice gift for you as well. Hope you'll receive it soon. ^_^ Rachel

雖然Elinor所引據的B用法是存在的, 也可以接受, 但就較廣泛通俗的用法而言, since在作「自從」之意思時其從屬子句動詞仍是以過去簡單式為多, 尤其在考試時通常以過去簡單式為標準答案, 同學們請加以注意. 因此我認為這樣寫較為妥當: There have been more than forty presidents of the United States since it became a country. since在作「既然」、「因為」之意思時, 時態則較不限制, 只須配合主要子句的時間背景不相矛盾即可.
