Writing Your College Admissions and Scholarship Essays

Your essay is and integral part of your college admissions and scholarship applications process. Your college admissions or scholarship essay should be personal, intriguing and above all well written. Your essay should have focus and should be specific. Your essay should make you stand out from all the other applicants and show the admissions officer who and what you truly are. Here are some tips on how to achieve these tasks.

Be Yourself:

When you write your essay you should choose a topic that has a true meaning to you. When you write about something special or has a deep meaning to you, that way it will show through in what you have written. You should consider writing about an event, a person, or a place that has affected you in some special way or that has helped you to shape who you are today. It is very important that you make your essay part of you so that an admissions officer can see who and what you are. You should include in your essay how you as a person are, if you are a passionate person, let that be part of how you write your essay. Write about your qualities and what motivates you.

Be Creative:

Make sure you can draw in the reader of your essay with and original introduction so he or she (Admissions Officer) will want to continue to read your essay. Your original introduction could be a question, a quote, a vivid description. Whatever it is it has to be compelling for the reader. You must take into consideration that admissions officers read thousands of essays and you must make yours stand out so that he or she will want to read what you have to say and what it says about you.

Provide a Clear Thesis and Prove It:

When writing your essay you must make sure the reader can identify the main point of your essay. Your thesis must indicate where you are going and what is it your trying to say from the very beginning. It should be stated in the introduction of your essay and should be supported with specific facts and examples.

Stay on Topic:

Colleges and scholarship organizations want you to write about specific topics or to answer certain questions. It is very important that you stay on topic throughout your essay. Your essay may have directions of a set limit of words of your essay and you should not make your essay shorter or even longer. There also may be other requirements for your essay and you should follow these requirements fully. Pay attention to what they want from you in your essay and fulfill that requirement or your essay will not meet their needs and it may be discounted for not meeting their requirements.

Use Words You Know, Don’t Write Over Your Head:

When writing your essay try to convey your words with strength but don’t try to use to many big words, use words that will make a admissions officer see you have a knowledge of the words you use. Your essay should flow easily throughout your essay and big words should only be used occasionally. Do not make the mistake of using a word incorrectly or you may find that your essay has been thrown out.

Proofread Your Essay:

You essay should have no mistakes of grammatical and style. You must proofread your essay several times and also have it proofread by a consultant, friend or someone that has knowledge of how an essay should be written before you even think of submitting it. Make sure there are no misspelled words, punctuation errors, or incomplete sentences. If your essay has grammatical or stylistic errors it may be dismissed by an admissions officer. When you are writing your college admissions essay(s), be sure that you make sure you are addressing the correct school by name, don’t make the mistake by saying a different school name on your essay. Admissions officers know that essays or sometimes sent to other schools but don’t make a big mistake by not referring to the school he or she represents.

Ask Others For Help:

You should ask some of your friends, parents, teachers or consultant to read your essay and proofread it for you. Ask for their feedback on your essay and what changes or corrections they have found. You may have read and reread your essay and you did not see any mistakes but someone else may see mistakes you have overlooked. If possible have a professional read and correct your essay for you, they have a knowledge of what admissions officers are looking for.
