When my boss catches me sleeping on the job, I always tell him I'm checking the back side of my eye lids.

Kathy, I read this on the net a while back, and here it is...

ten best excuses when you get caught falling asleep on your desk:

10. "They told me at the blood bank this might happen."

9. "This is just a 15 minute power-nap like they raved about in that time management course you sent me to."

8. "Whew! Guess I left the top off the White-Out. You probably got here just in time!"

7. "I wasn't sleeping! I was meditating on the mission statement and envisioning a new paradigm."

6. "I was testing my keyboard for drool resistance."

5. "I was doing a highly specific Yoga exercise to relieve
work-related stress. Are you discriminatory toward people who practice Yoga?"

4. "Why did you interrupt me? I had almost figured out a
solution to our biggest problem."

3. "The coffee machine is broken..."

2. "Someone must've put decaf in the wrong pot..."

And the #1 best thing to say if you get caught sleeping at your desk...

1. " ... in Jesus' name. Amen."

You know your boss may visit the site one day.

Ah..what a grave mistake ne! Haha!
A common term we used here is "吃蛇" instead of "摸鱼".

ha yun, it is interesting. In sg, using"snake";In Taiwan, using"fish". Does anyone know why we use"snake' and "fish" to describle this situation?

I guess the fish often siwm so 悠閒地in the river, just like people are liying down on the job. My wild guessing!!
ps: I heard someone said HK people use "snake king" to describe lazy people on the job.

Gogo.."eat snake" actually came from Hokkien(福建话).
CHIAK TSUA (Pronounced in Hokkien)
(chia'h tsoo'ah)
Hokkien term literally meaning, "to eat snake". Means to goof off or skive.

Can we say 上班摸魚=swimming?

我在HBO看到的一段劇情和對話:

一位新來的老師在黑板上寫著:NO SWIMMING!
並對著學生說,這是我的上課規則:不許鬼混!(中文字幕是這麼寫的)

"NO SWIMMING" 可以是http://www.wretch.cc/blog/dashycheetah&article_id=5945003 「禁止游泳」也可以是「不要鬼混、摸魚」

My try

My try

From dictionary.com
swim
swam, swum, swim·ming
–verb (used without object)
...
6. to be dizzy or giddy; seem to whirl: My head began to swim.

swimming有眼花、暈眩之意, 在課堂上的"no swimming"指的應是「不許不專心、心不在焉」.
