This proverb is attributed to Diogenes in the form of "the sun shines into dung but is not tainted." We do have some sayings similar to this in essence in Chinese. Great people won't care about other people's bad words against them. They will still treat those who defile them the same. This state of mentality should be something we strive for.

in mainland an ancient article came down for it's famous sentence "出淤泥而不染,濯清蓮而不妖", that's the saying u need to reveal the ability in philosophy of our ancestors.
