This saying shows great insight into marital life. It is not easy to keep a marriage well as the two sides might come from very different backgrounds and have different views on life. If the two sides cannot put up with any of the traits the other side shows, the marriage might break anytime. So sometimes they have to play "dumb" to make their life smooth.

I agree that sometimes playing "dumb" can make marriage smooth, but that may get things worse instead. Expressing what you feel and communicating with each other are better than keeping silent.
