OPTIMIZATION THEORY

MATHEMATICS – OPTIMIZATION THEORY

Can someone please solve this.

An archery target manufacturer has an order for

10 large stands
4 medium stands
4 small stands

Large stands require

2 pieces of wood 2035mm long
2 pieces of wood 1990mm long
2 pieces of wood 1330mm long
1 piece of wood 1425mm long

Medium stands require

2 pieces of wood 1800mm long
2 pieces of wood 1755mm long
2 pieces of wood 890mm long
1 piece of wood 985mm long

Small stands require

2 pieces of wood 1700mm long
2 pieces of wood 1655mm long
2 pieces of wood 670mm long
1 piece of wood 765mm long

Each piece of wood comes in lengths 5100mm long. How many pieces of wood are required to produce the 18 assorted archery stands and what is the most economic way to cut the wood, with minimum (< 1.0%) wastage?

CORRIGENDUM

My apologies for the typo.
Wastage should read <10% instead.

a piece of cake, 7 pieces of woods for each stand, so
SUM=10x7+4x7+4x7=126

Rony ...

Good try! The catch here is OPTIMIZATION!

The total length required for the entire project is 193,800mm of wood.

Your 126 pieces of 5,100mm wood gives a linear measurement of 642,600mm.

Second chance!

Anonymous, an easy way out would be for the archery target manufacturer to refuse the order, no wood would be used, no trees would have to be cut down, we don't have to solve this problem, the green peace people would be very happy.

Hmmmmm, disagree. The customer would go to another supplier. So, the tree will still be cut.

I remembered that NZ pine trees can grow so fast, in a very suprising speed.
